The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Life – Book Review

I received copies of The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Life along with The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur a few weeks after the last Vegan MoFo. (Full story on the review for The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur.) I now, very belatedly, offer my review.

I think both Melisser Elliot and the book are super cute, but I had a really hard time forcing myself to sit down with it at first. By the end I had several post-it flags marking things to come back and try, but if I hadn’t agreed to do a book review, I’m not sure I would have made it that far in. Or maybe I just would have skipped ahead sooner?

Once I got farther in though, my post-it flags started flying. I bookmarked sections on creating your own natural cleaners, vegan beauty products, and a ton of the recipes.

A main feature of the book is full color profiles of vegans, mostly bloggers and/or store owners. These were attractive and introduced me to a few shops that I went and checked out online, but I also felt they often interrupted the flow of reading the main text of the book. It was awkward to have to flip forward two pages to finish a sentence or paragraph and then flip back again to read the profiles.

I think the main problem for me with this book was that the first half of the book wasn’t designed for me. It seems more designed for new vegans. Or even more so for people questioning whether to become vegan.  The book opens with a lot of information on what veganism is, why people choose to go vegan, different types of vegans, and being an activist.  I think it’s probably an excellent addition to that area, it’s just not what I was expecting from the title. Where are my crafts, recipes and beauty secrets?

Melisser may not have even had a say in the title, I know that happens, but I feel it was a pretty misleading representation of the bulk of the book. A better summary might be something more like: an introduction to veganism including a shopping guide highlighting vegan businesses, a bunch of recipes and couple projects.

But lest this review seem too negative, I do want to point out, I’m not offering it up for giveaway. I want to make too many of the recipes. 🙂

The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur – Book review and giveaway

Back around when Vegan MoFo was starting up Skyhorse publishing left me a comment offering two books for me to review (The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur and The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Life). I accepted and then didn’t hear anything. I assumed that upon further inspection they realized what small potatoes I was and (understandably) changed their minds. In fact, I even forgot which books they had offered. So when I won a copy of The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur I didn’t realize this was one of the books that was potentially coming my way. Then, several weeks after MoFo wrapped, the package from Skyhorse Publishing arrived, beaten and bruised. The books were fine, but apparently the package had come open and been marked damaged, repackaged and maybe lost for a while too. So apologies to Skyhorse and the authors for my very belated reviews when I’m sure you were all trying to do a big MoFo push.

And with that background out of the way, I will say that I have nothing but rave reviews for The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur. First off, it’s a beautiful book. There are full color glossy photos for every cookie. Second off, the cookies are fantastic. So far I’ve made:

and they have all turned out great. The recipes are simple, easy to follow, and (other than alcohol) never called for ingredients I didn’t already have on hand. (Though there are some more complicated recipes in there that I haven’t tried yet if that’s more your thing.) I’m particularly excited to have a cookie cookbook since cookies are so fun and quick. I have a bunch of pretty jars I keep on my counter and I like to keep at least one of them filled with cookies. I also have people over pretty often and like to have treats to offer. So far I’ve avoided Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar because, as I’ve mentioned before, I have not had good luck with any of the baked goods from Veganomicon. (Love the main course recipes and love VwaV, but not the baked goods.) I am interested in seeing the errata for the Vegan Cookie Connoisseur when it comes out though. It could just be my wonky oven, but I had to cook most of the cookies I made an extra 5-10 minutes, but that’s a pretty minor quibble.

I want to rave about the oatmeal cookies in particular. I have been on the hunt for really chewy really oatmealy vegan oatmeal cookies for ages and I finally have my winner. The PB&J Thumbprints are probably my next favorite. All of the cookies I’ve made get tested by my omni fiance and D&D group and they’ve all been huge successes and even gotten the, “really, they’re vegan?” incredulous look, so I definitely definitely recommend picking up a copy (or checking your local library).

And now for the giveaway. Since I have an extra copy, leave a comment with a link to a favorite vegan baked goods (cookie, scone, coffee cake, etc.) recipe and I’ll do the random number generator thing at 1pm, January 30th.

Congratulations Claire!

Vegan Shrimp

I visited the local Asian mega grocery and came back with lots of fun treats, including vegan shrimp. They were pretty rubbery, but I think maybe real shrimp is kinda rubbery too? Rick doesn’t like real shrimp anyway and I was not super impressed, so I probably won’t be getting them again.

Vegan MoFo: Day 30 FTW!

What a fantastic way to wrap up Vegan MoFo. I won The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur from a giveaway at Miso for Breakfast! I want to make almost every single one of them. Luckily I owe a neighbor some cookies for letting my leave my scooter on his porch during the holiday and am joining a cookie exchange at my new Saturday girl’s game. So expect reviews soon.

Vegan MoFo: Day 28

I saw this recipe for Autumn Spiced Popcorn. I didn’t follow it exactly. I just mixed the spices and dumped them on some microwave popcorn. It was OK, but not a big hit. Then I had a lot of left over spice. So I dumped some in some tea and it was pretty darn good.
